Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata):
Therapeutic actions: Anthelmintic,
anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiplatelet, antipyretic, bitter
tonic, choleretic, hepatoprotective, immune enhancing. (Bone, 2003, p.
65) Phytochemical constituents that enhance these:
- Andrographolide, neoandrographolide, andrographiside, diterpene dimers, flavonoids. (Mills & Bone, 2000, p. 263)
Supporting evidence: In
vitro studies on rat hepatocytes showed andrographolide to have a
greater hepatoprotective effect than silymarin. Patients with acute
bacillary dysentry and enteritis showed positive results in
uncontrolled Chinese studies using Andrographis and andrographolides.
In experimental models, levels of bile were increased after oral and
intraperitoneal administration of andrographolide. (Bone, 2003, p.
67-68) |
